15.10.2022, 10:30
Divadlo P. O. Hviezdoslava, Laurinská 20, 811 01 Bratislava
Join us for the science event of the year, with Nobel Prize laureate Ada Yonath. The world renowned scientist will be discussing the origin of life, her research and passion for science, and her inspiring story as a woman in science.
Join us for the science event of the year, with world renowened scientist and Nobel Prize laureate Ada Yonath. For decades, Ada Yonath has been studying life at the molecular level, specifically ribosomes. Thanks to Ada and her fellow scientists, we now know much more about how DNA code forms the building blocks of not only muscles, bones and skin, but also our senses (hearing, taste and smell) and probably even thinking and speech. The study of ribosomes has led to incredible discoveries that affect each of us, providing answers to questions about the origin of life, whilst also informing our understanding of antibiotic resistance and the development of new antibiotics.
Ada Yonath will be visiting Slovakia for the ESET Science Award 2022, which recognises exceptional individuals in Slovak science.
Program:
09:30 – 10:30 Arrival of the guests
10:30 – 12:00 Discussion What is the origin of life?
About Ada E. Yonath
Ada Yonath is a prominent scientist driven by curiosity - the quality that she considers key to humankind’s progress on the path to knowledge. During her scientific career she was called a dreamer and her theories were often questioned. However, her persistence and tenacity led to her receiving the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her successful research into the structure and function of ribosomes, which potentially hold the secret of the origin of life. She is the current director of the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structure and Assembly of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Dresscode: casual
The discussion is organised by the ESET Foundation and ESET.
